I was always a hardworking student throughout nursing school, and it is with that tenacity that I attempted to prepare myself for the NCLEX. I had practiced hundreds of questions, had done several review courses, but yet I continued to have anxiety attacks leading up to the date of my exam. After Professor Sue assessed my situation, she did not hesitate to tell me that I was not ready for the exam. With my family vacation one week away, Sue took up the challenge to tutor me while on vacation via Face Time.
Sue and I interacted via video conference from Guyana, South America, and my time in Grenada and Trinidad in the Caribbean. I spent a total of one month studying at least three hours per day on vacation. The program that we created together was very systematic and it aimed at strengthening my weakest areas. What Sue was able to do was change the way I thought when answering the NCLEX questions, and ensure that I was applying all of the test taking strategies that I had learned in nursing school. My biggest challenge was not my knowledge deficit, but it was my attitude towards the entire exam. Sue was very straightforward by telling me from our first meeting that if I did not change my attitude, all of the help in the world was not going to make me successful. I often joked with her saying that she was an excellent cognitive-behavioral therapist; that is just how great she has been!
